Summary

Lenny Marks is good at not remembering。

She has spent the last twenty years not thinking about the day her mother left her when she was still a child。 Her stepfather’s parting words, however, remain annoyingly unforgettable: 'You did this。'

Now thirty-seven, Lenny prefers contentment and order over the unreliability of happiness and the messiness of relationships。 She fills her days teaching at the local primary school, and her nights playing Scrabble with her pretend housemate, watching reruns of Friends and rearranging her thirty-six copies of The Hobbit。

Recently though, if only to appease her beloved foster-mum, Lenny has set herself the goal of ‘getting a life’。
Then, out of the blue, a letter arrives from the Adult Parole Board。 And when her desperate attempts to ignore it fail, Lenny starts to unravel。

Worse, she starts to remember 。 。 。

The school teacher has a past which comes to back when a letter arrives to the school she teaches at。 She has always been a reserved, organised member of staff, but this letter leads to her taking long service leave from work and events move on from there。 Her background holds secrets, and the sub title to the main title gives a hint that things may be revealed towards the end of the book。 A very different book and it will be interesting to discuss with friends who have read it。

4。5/5 The cover and blurb of this book would lead you to think this is a light-hearted, cosy read, but it really isn't (and I mean that in a good way)。 Awkward, socially stunted and clearly traumatised Lenny Marks is a completely loveable main character, but her story is shockingly tragic。 Her trauma is gradually revealed with a liberal sprinkling of humour and good-hearted side characters, and it's this mix of comedy and agonising sadness that really makes this brilliant debut novel stand out。 4。5/5 The cover and blurb of this book would lead you to think this is a light-hearted, cosy read, but it really isn't (and I mean that in a good way)。 Awkward, socially stunted and clearly traumatised Lenny Marks is a completely loveable main character, but her story is shockingly tragic。 Her trauma is gradually revealed with a liberal sprinkling of humour and good-hearted side characters, and it's this mix of comedy and agonising sadness that really makes this brilliant debut novel stand out。 Lenny herself is immediately sympathetic - introverted and invisible, yet kind and dedicated。 She's surrounded by a cast of likeable characters and caricatures, all written with insight and just enough relatable detail (special mention to the school staffroom sequences with Yvonne, which are fully laugh out loud moments and hit just the right note for alleviating some of the tenser and more disturbing events)。Fans of novels like Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine will devour this one, and I'll be joining the chorus of reviews stating that they can't wait to see what author Kerryn Marks writes next! 。。。more

What an exceptional and engrossing read! I listened to the audio book and had to keep finding things to do so I could just keep listening。。。 Clean the house, fold the clothes, walk the dog。。。 You get the idea。 The characters were engaging and beautifully developed and portrayed。 The storyline was multifaceted and interesting。 I will be watching for the next book by Kerryn。 ❤️

This novel is EXCEPTIONAL。 I loved Lenny so much。 Her heartbreaking story had me crying, laughing, suspended all throughout, no breaks。 Lenny’s literal ways and awkwardness was written to perfection。 It takes a real talent to power through to the end with a spectacular finish and I thought it was just right。 This story will stay with me for a long time。 Can’t wait for another one to read !!! 。。。more

This book was very character driven。 I really loved the book and Lenny as a character。 I loved the setting and the friendships。 It was all so well put together。 The only reason it wasn’t a 5 star would be the rushing of the end and more into Fergus at the end。 I felt that was all abit to rushed。 Still a great book

“… what better opportunity to start a new project than covering up a crime scene。”Although, having highlighted this line, I'd be more inclined to put it in the General Fiction section。 It deals with trauma - so fair warning - and a not so subtle need for this detective/author to have our heroine deserving of a happy ending, while sending awful men to the dung heap。 Good riddance I say。 & so does Lenny。 “… what better opportunity to start a new project than covering up a crime scene。”Although, having highlighted this line, I'd be more inclined to put it in the General Fiction section。 It deals with trauma - so fair warning - and a not so subtle need for this detective/author to have our heroine deserving of a happy ending, while sending awful men to the dung heap。 Good riddance I say。 & so does Lenny。 。。。more

Defiantly going against the grain here。 This book should come with a trigger warning。 Nothing of the blurb suggested that。 There is cruelty to a dog, then there is an example of a grown man of gripping an 11 year old, leaving a bruise, and doing it 'on the sly' when the mother is present。 I found this upsetting。 I also wasn't sure what the author was going for, is the main character neurodivergent? She has obviously suffered trauma, as we find out, but I just couldn't keep going。 I read where th Defiantly going against the grain here。 This book should come with a trigger warning。 Nothing of the blurb suggested that。 There is cruelty to a dog, then there is an example of a grown man of gripping an 11 year old, leaving a bruise, and doing it 'on the sly' when the mother is present。 I found this upsetting。 I also wasn't sure what the author was going for, is the main character neurodivergent? She has obviously suffered trauma, as we find out, but I just couldn't keep going。 I read where the abusive stepfather confronted his own mother and the grown child was present, he was abusive。 It was too much。 The ending? Come on。 'Happy ever after'? I'm not sure what the other reviewers read。 However for someone who has suffered abuse, I couldn't read it。 The part where the dog is hit, I couldn't read that either。 Whilst the story itself might be good from the other side, it's not for those who have been affected by abuse。 I read Eleanor Oliphant, and that dealt much better with the subject。 You don't need specific examples of abuse。 Implied is more than enough。 I just don't think the tone of the novel was right, it felt off to me。 It is also not as well written as Richard Osman who gets the tone perfect。 。。。more

This was highly engaging and endearing。 The title is intriguing, and I was kept wondering how it would eventually tie in to the storyline! Really enjoyed getting to know Lenny, and I can't wait for you to meet her! TW: child/domestic/physical abuse, bullying, depression, dissociation 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨/5 。。。more

Lenny is a complex multi-faceted character, and Ms Mayne has surrounded her with a range of characters both sympathetic and despicable。 We gradually learn Lenny’s backstory and Lenny gradually learns that (some) people can be trusted。 There are several twists in the story, including a quite unorthodox dog rescue, and the development of some endearing relationships。 Does Lenny get away with murder?
